GX3SRC Operation at SMEC's Open Day on the 16th May: This annual event (75th Year) was supported by Maurice G4DDY, John G8MNY, Kim G6JXA, Charles M0BIN and Alvin G6DTW. Maurice G4DDY, Charles M0BIN and I put up Maurice's G5RV on Friday morning between the 2 largest trees at about 60ft using my Catapult and fishing line, then we put up the shack tent. At 08:00 sunday everything was still OK and I set up the furniture for the station kit. Maurice, Alvin G6DTW, and Charles also helped, so we were able to get on the SRCC topband net by 09:30, with the addition of a good copper earth spike from Maurice. While the net was going on I installed a Drake L-4B linear ready for later QRO HF working with an AF PA as system well so public could listen in to both sides of the contacts. Alvin helped me put up a 2m 7/8 mobile aerial at 25ft. RFI test done with Maurice's main public address system right under aerial were completely clear even at 400W SSB! Other items on show were a Morse key and buzzer, and a 50kW water cooled HF PA valve (steam radio!). Kim G6JXA joined the group for the main event in the afternoon and did quite a bit of the DX operating. On HF we worked 15 English stations, 1 Northern Irish, 3 Canadian, 1 Norwegian, 2 Italian, 1 Maltese, 8 Russian, 2 Slovenian, 1 Spanish, 1 Swedish, 1 Thai, and 2 USA. Wx for the event was threatening, but not much more than the occasional light drizzle and the public were able to enjoy the day with all the handmade working models on display. The above report reproduced with the kind permission of the SRCC.
